67% auto meters remain to be recalibrated

MUMBAI: The state transport department has recalibrated only 33% e-meters in autorickshaws in Mumbai and nearly 67% more (60,000 autos) remain to be recalibrated.

The deadline for recalibrating the meters is November 25, which is just about a week away. It is not clear how the RTOs would be able to recalibrate all meters by the deadline. State transport commissioner V N More is, however, keen on punishing drivers who fail to recalibrate meters by next weekend. "If they do not recalibrate the meters, our flying squads will issue notices, fine them and forcibly send them for recalibration," he stated.

Taxi drivers too have failed to recalibrate the meters. As many as 15,000 cabbies are yet to go to RTO for the recalibration. Said taxi union leader A L Quadros, "There is a shortage of e-meters in the market and this had delayed the recalibration. We now demand that the deadline should be extended to April next year. Our cabbies with mechanical meters can get them replaced with new e-meters during the annual fitness test." More said that there was no shortage of e-meters in the market and this was just an excuse by unions to buy more time.

"The drivers should rush to the respective RTOs as our officers are working round-the-clock to recalibrate maximum number of meters daily," a senior RTO official said. He further stated that those with mechanical meters should go for a replacement and get new e-meters.
