Texting habits too show differences along gender lines. Women, for instance, are more likely than men to use emoticons to say they are happy or sad, said a new study from Rice University in Texas. In fact, the study looked at 1,24,000 text messages from men and women over six months to find that women were twice as likely as men to use emoticons.
Created using punctuation marks and letters, emotions areused to convey whether a person's emotions. In fact, the Rice University study found that while 74 different emoticons can be used, 70% of the times people used only three emotions to show they were happy, very happy or sad.
The study, 'A Longitudinal Study of Emoticon Use in Text Messaging from Smartphones', looked at texting because it is emerging as the favourite way of communication. An American estimate suggests that 8 trillion text messages will be sent in 2012.
A press release put up on the Rice University website said,"Texting does not appear to require as much socio-emotional context as other means of nonverbal communications.'' This, it said, could be due to texting's simplicity and briefer communication, which removes some of the pressures that are inherent in other types of non-face-to-face communication, like email or blogs.
As for the gender divide, the study merely concludes that women are more emotionally expressive than men in nonverbal communication.
