MUMBAI: When cricketer Sachin Tendulkar asked parents, through public interest advertisements on television, to give the oral polio vaccine to their under-five child, many Indians actually did. Similarly, it helped create awareness when actor Shabana Azmi said on TV that AIDS doesn't spread through touch. The power of celebrity in spreading a health message has largely been established. When reality TV actor Jade Goody was diagnosed with cervical cancer, the number of women undergoing preventive checks for the cancer immediately shot up in Britain.
Now, a new study published in The Lancet has identified new public health battles that urgently need superheroes. Topmost on the list of health problem is the growing epidemic of obesity. Abuse of alcohol are smoking are other challenges that superheroes need to wipe out.
The research, which was jointly undertaken by the universities of Leeds, Alberta and Wisconsin, suggested that these public health 'superheroes' can come from both within public health disciplines or from outside the profession. World Health Organisation data reveals the extent of the challenge: worldwide obesity has doubled since 1980 and alcohol abuse leads to 2.5 million deaths each year.
Tobacco kills nearly 6 million people each year across the world. In India, too, the problems of obesity, alcohol abuse and smoking are acute. While the government has in recent times started an effective anti-tobacco campaign, the problem of obesity has still not been largely addressed.
