The party's controversial Rajya Sabha MP, Ajay Sancheti, finds himself caught in a bind following revelation of how his firms won mega dam contracts in Vidarbha during the tenure of Ajit Pawar, the then water resources minister. Pawar resigned last week following a TOI expose about his role in hurriedly sanctioning irrigation projects worth Rs 20,000 crore without proper authorisation.
Sancheti, a close aide of BJP president Nitin Gadkari, was awarded contracts in excess of what the norms mandated. A non-existing company owned by him bagged contracts worth Rs 1,350 crore in 2007-08. The firm Shakti Kumar M Sancheti ltd, was renamed SMS Infrastructure. Yet the Vidarbha Irrigation Development Corporation (VIDC) gave contracts to both Shakti Sancheti Ltd as well as SMS Infrastructure. This was done despite a clear cut stipulation that a single contractor could not procure more than three contracts.
So far Sancheti has only given a bland statement to a section of the media that his company followed rules and regulations. But the BJP has much to answer for, considering it is gearing up to attack the NCP and its former deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar for the scam.
Last week, an activist of India Against Corruption muddied the waters for the BJP when she alleged that party president Gadkari had business links with the Pawars. Gadkari hit back by issuing a legal notice to the activist. The opposition party, desperate to regain power in the state as well as the centre, should come clean. Public perception is that some of its leaders are hand-in-glove with those responsible for the biggest scam in Maharashtra's history.
