Man who stabbed Chembur senior citizen surrenders

MUMBAI: A 20-year-old youth has been arrested for allegedly stabbing a senior citizen, Anusaya Dhyani, at her Chembur flat last Friday. To escape arrest, the accused, Pritam Paswan, for the last two days kept travelling in locals, back and forth from CST to Ulhasnagar.

However, when he learnt that the police had made his father sit in the police station since he went into hiding, he decided to surrender himself.

Cops had tracked down Paswan with the help of a mobile bill that he had dropped after stabbing Dhyani. Investigators used the pin code number on the bill to trace the courier agent's address, which led to the two accused.

The other accused, Sandeep Chaurasiya (25), had been arrested on Saturday from his house at PL Lokhande Marg. The two accused had joined the Kurla (E)-based Sambhaji Couriers a few days before committing the crime. "They have confessed to the crime. They committed the offence for money to splurge on playing online lottery and women," said the police.

The incident occurred on October 12 afternoon, when Paswan visited Dhyani's flat at Chheda Nagar, apparently to deliver a mobile bill, said the police. Dhyani was alone at home when the accused knocked on the door; her daughter, Lata (40), was away at her Navi Mumbai office.

The police said Paswan first tried to sedate Dhyani with chloroform but she resisted. "As she screamed, the accused caught her by the neck, pulled out a knife and stabbed her on the abdomen," the police said.

Alarmed by Dhyani's cries, her neighbours rushed out of their flat and took her to a hospital. "Dhyani is stable and under observation in ICU. She is recovering but is still under trauma. We are counselling her," Dr Roy Patankar at Joy Hospital said.

Tilak Nagar senior inspector R M Gavit said, "Paswan was aware of senior citizens staying alone and zeroed in on Dhyani," said Gavit. The two accused are in custody till October 19.
