If he is not packed into a cramped auto, rickshaw, taxi or mini-bus like a sardine, he or she has to hang on to dear life in the school bus.
The injury to five little students because the school bus mounted a divider on the Ghatkopar-Mankhurd Link Road on Tuesday morning only confirms the need for an urgent need to look into this. It is not just the responsibility of the government though. The schools have to take it upon themselves to ensure the safety of their students, especially the kids.
Even though some measures have been taken, including painting a helpline number to complain if any school bus seems to be moving too fast, it is clearly not enough.
The fact remains that the drivers behind the wheel of a school bus are among the most rash. They always seem to be in a hurry, racing past traffic signals or taking dangerous turns at the first opportunity.
Quick steps to punish errant drivers, or at least to teach them to drive with utmost care, should be the order of the day.
