MUMBAI: 'Smiles32' - a social service project taken up by a group of young dentists to spread oral hygiene awareness among the underprivileged people and people with special needs -- conducted a special dental health camp in Navi Mumbai.

On October 7, Smiles32 conducted the camp for the Deaf and Deaf-blind at the Helen Keller's Institute for Deaf & Deaf-blind. The dentists Dr. Manasi Bhargava, Dr. Bijal Jakharia and Dr. Nisha Patel examined 18 deaf and Deaf-blind students at the institute -- 11 children below age of 15 years and 7 people above 15 yrs of age.

They also examined 22 teachers, trainees and staff in the institute.

The difficulties the dentists faced with the deaf-blind was that the caregivers had to be totally involved as the instructions and oral hygiene brushing demo cannot be seen by the deaf-blind. As regards the deaf students, the instructions were given to both the students and the caregivers. Some of them had low vision while others had medical problems like motor or muscle disabilities.

The goal of Smiles32 is to extend it to more underprivileged people etc. In future, it would like to conduct dental treatment camps, and spread its activities to various places even out side Mumbai/ Navi Mumbai.
