Commuter groups want more share autos, taxis in city

MUMBAI: Commuter rights activists have demanded more permits for share autos and taxis in Mumbai. They feel that the presence of more public transport vehicles on road will bring in healthy competition and also reduce number of refusal cases.

Said Shirish Deshpande of Mumbai Grahak Panchayat (MGP),"Refusals by drivers is a serious problem in Mumbai. There is a wide demand-supply gap, and since the number of autos are less as compared to the demand from passengers, drivers behave arrogantly and blatantly refuse to ply."

He said that apart from intoducing more autos and taxis, there should be more shuttle routes outside stations. The share auto services ensure that commuters get an auto to their destination. It also reduced congestion (three different passengers in one auto instead of three) and keeps a check on pollution.

The passengers are also happy as they have to pay less than 50 % of the fare. Activists are demanding that the transport department should give permits to six and eight seater cabs so that maximum passengers can be ferried at a time. "It will save money of passengers and drivers can earn more on the share routes," said a consumer activist.

The MGP has also petitioned chief minister Prithviraj Chavan asking him to look into the problems faced by commuters. Said Varsha Raut from MGP, "We want the CM to direct the transport officials to conduct regular drives and book errant drivers involved in meter tampering, fake tariff card and refusals," she said. The transport department has already doubled the fines for refusals and fake tariff cards. In case of tampering, if any driver is caught with tampered e-meter, his permit will be sent for cancellation, an official added.
